“Marco Caria draws well a modern Alfio, restrained and composed, different from certain ranting and truculent caricatures of so-called tradition. On the contrary, the suppressed anger and the fineness of the vocal nuances give his character a three-dimensionality that no caricature could ever have; especially noteworthy is the sober ending that charges the character with a decidedly interesting ineluctability“.

“The betrayed carter is portrayed in exemplary fashion by the talented baritone Marco Caria, already personally appreciated in the part of Germont father in last year's Traviata, also at the Sassari Theater. His voice has the warmth and softness of velvet, expressive, and richly nuanced. His Alfio has a proud posture and a good-natured look capable of changing quickly to become hard and unyielding. An all-hands-on-deck man who works and demands respect from the moment he enters the stage with the whip he cracks in time. The voice is wide and emerges from the chorus and orchestral wall.
To his saying “M'aspetto a casa Lola che m'ama e mi consolola, ch'è tutto fedeltà” the male part of the chorus seems to assent confidently, unlike the female section where the women seem more engaged in gossiping, and it is legitimate to think that they are maligning Lola's alleged fidelity.
Extremely successful is his fury at learning of the betrayal and swearing revenge on the two traitors. But the most scenically beautiful moment is the confrontation with Turiddu and the subtle provocations to induce him to duel: the firm and resolute way in which he refuses the wine, the icy gaze turned to his rival with his mouth bent in sardonic laughter, some small gestures addressed to his companions draw a complex Alfio, far from a stereotypical vision, more real, cold, determined...more “balente.”.
He is a man who is guided by a sense of honor but keeps his impulses in check by acting with terrible coldness. His superiority, compared to a young, drunken Turiddu, in the grip of his passions and furious impulses that he cannot control, is obvious, and he leaves his opponent no chance in the sword fight that takes place off-screen“.
