“On the other hand, the performance of Marco Caria from Sassari, in the part of Germont the father, was remarkable for expression, vocal beauty and variety of accents: excellent in the duet with Violetta, he lands well the insidious anadiploses in Di Provenza il mare, il suol... The mid-acoustic register, burnished and sonorous, is his best weapon...“.
Gabriele Verdinelli, GBopera
“The jewel in the crown of this production is baritone Marco Caria who delineates a truly extraordinary Papà Germont. A powerful voice but capable of a thousand nuances. Spontaneous acting with meticulous gestures and truly participatory facial expressions. In the duet with Violetta in Act II, for very brief moments, we see him participate in her pain.
Almost overcome with compassion he makes to extend his hand in a caress, unseen, only to quickly withdraw it and recompose himself in his role as an authoritarian father who must complete a task however arduous it may be. In the duet with Alfredo equally he jolts as he reads Violetta's letter and realizes the woman's profound sacrifice; no less does he approach his son with the force and overbearingness of a nineteenth-century-style master father. Less devious manipulator and more infantry officer ready to give orders.
He performs “Di Provenza il mare, il suol...” with a bewitching richness of interpretation, just as refined and full of color is the execution of “No, non udrai rimproveri copriam d'obliom il passato...“.
