Biography

Marco Caria, born in Oristano, Sardinia, is now recognized as one of the most fascinating and influential voices on the international opera scene.

From an early age he showed a natural talent: when he was only 5 years old he began studying the guitar and then continued his musical training at the “L. Canepa” Conservatory of Sassari.

Further training took place at prestigious institutions such as the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he quickly distinguished himself, winning numerous competitions including the «Tito Gobbi,» «Domenico Alaleona,» «Luciano Neroni» and «Iris Adami Corradetti.».

Thanks to the «Nicolai Ghiaurov» scholarship, he deepened his studies at the Ateneo Internazionale della Lirica in Sulmona with masters such as Gianni Raimondi, Mirella Freni and Luciana Serra, then continued for five years at Cubec - Accademia del Belcanto in Modena under the guidance of Mirella Freni herself.

In 2002, he made his debut in the role of Don Alvaro in Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims at the Teatro Marrucino in Chieti, after being awarded best student at the Ateneo Internazionale della Lirica in Sulmona.

From then on, his rise was unstoppable: in 2007 he won second prize and the audience award in Paris at Placido Domingo's prestigious Operalia competition.

Significant debuts followed as Rodrigo in Don Carlo (Cincinnati Opera), Don Carlo in La forza del destino (Cincinnati May Festival), Giorgio Germont in La traviata (Cincinnati and Venice), Marcello in La bohème (Cincinnati), Silvio in Pagliacci (Venice) and Cecil in Maria Stuarda (Venice).

Major engagements in later years include:

  • Lucia di Lammermoor (Henry) in Rome, Berlin, Beijing, Barcelona, Muscat, Amsterdam and Palermo
  • Don Carlos (Rodrigo) in Lima
  • Maria Padilla (Don Pedro) at the Wexford Opera Festival
  • Mary Stuart (Cecil) in Trieste and Naples
  • Simon Boccanegra (Paolo Albiani) conducted by Riccardo Muti in Tokyo and at the Regio di Parma
  • Pagliacci (Tonio) at the Macerata Opera Festival
  • Rigoletto at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona
  • The Barber of Seville (Figaro) in Bilbao
  • Falstaff (Ford) in Los Angeles
  • La bohème (Marcello) for the reopening of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, in Shanghai, on tour in Korea and at the Salle Pleyel in Paris
  • Il trovatore (Count of the Moon) at the Macerata Opera Festival

He was also a guest at the prestigious «Juan Diego Flórez and Friends» gala at the Barbican Center in London, alongside Joyce DiDonato.


Particularly intense is his collaboration with the Vienna State Opera, where he appeared in La bohème, Madama Butterfly, L'elisir d'amore, Simon Boccanegra, Pagliacci, Falstaff, Werther, Lucia di Lammermoor, Roberto Devereuxover the years, in addition to the more recent productions of Andrea Chénier and The Barber of Seville.


He has collaborated with world-renowned conductors such as. Roberto Abbado, Yves Abel, Marco Armiliato, Bruno Campanella, Myung-Whun Chung, Ottavio Dantone, Valery Gergiev, Michele Mariotti, Riccardo Muti, Daniel Oren, Stefano Ranzani, Nello Santi and Pinchas Steinberg, and with directors such as Damiano Michieletto and Luca Ronconi.


Some of the most important engagements in recent seasons include:The Corsair and Rigoletto Modena; Il trovatore and Aida At the Sferisterio in Macerata; The troubadour in Beijing and Athens; The Barber of Seville Vienna; Rigoletto in Bologna and Cagliari; Carmen and Pagliacci Cagliari; A Masked Ball in Barcelona and Vienna; Lucia di Lammermoor Athens and Beijing; The Pirate (Ernesto) St. Gallen; Andrea Chénier in Tours; Aida at the Baths of Caracalla; Rigoletto in Chisinau and Daegu; La traviata at the Rome Opera House; Joan of Arc in Tours; Carmen at the Regio di Parma and Reggio Emilia; Simon Boccanegra Palermo; Tosca in Montpellier.


Many positive reviews were also received for: La Traviata in Sassari and at the Terme di Caracalla; debut in Cavalleria rusticana (Alfio); Pagliacci (Tonio) in Sassari; Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Wiener Staatsoper (Figaro); debut in the title role in Nabucco in Sassari; La bohème in Tokyo; and Un ballo in maschera in China.


Notable recent debuts include Scarpia, acclaimed in Tosca in Montpellier (2022) and Sassari (2024), with confirmed anticipation for summer 2026 at the Margarethen Festival in Vienna, Barnaba in La Gioconda in Cagliari (2025), Jago in Otello, a powerful and successful performance in Sassari (2024), and also the title role in Simone Boccanegra in the 2026/27 season.
