“The most psychologically interesting role, and best played, from my point of view, during both evenings, was Marco Caria's Paolo Albiani. The baritone, enjoying a particular softness in his emission and perfect diction, embodied the Mephistophelean character who seems a precursor to Iago. Caria's singing excites at the opening of Act II (“Me stesso ho maledetto! E l'anatema m'insegue ancor”), that is, the scene that seals the doge's fate; he is incisive in intoning the few words that explain his intervention in the unfolding of the story (“Scordasti che mi devi il soglio,” Act I); he moves, also for beauty of timbre, at the beginning of Act III (“All'estremo supplizio”).”.
The review refers to the performances on February 22 and 23, 2022.
